Jew Watch & Google

After class today, i decided to google "Jew" and see what the results were. While i knew that the first result would be "Jew Watch," i was more interested in seeing the disclaimer that Google has posted regarding searches for Jews. I took some time and skimmed through the title page of JewWatch as well, and found some of the things that they considered to be associated with Jews to be, quite hilarious....these included:
  • Jewish Criminals
  • Jewish Communists
  • Jewish Pornographers
  • Jewish Slavery
  • Jewish Supremacists
  • Jewish Hate Groups
  • Jewish Religions (of which included is: Atheism, Christianity, & Wiccan Cults)
I definitely chuckled after looking at this page, and the first thought that came to mind was, who would actually look at this site and believe anything that was posted on it? It just seemed to be so out there, that anyone with any kind of intellect would dismiss it as being uncredible.

In fact, Google sort of confirms this in its statement explaining why it appears first in the search for "Jew":

"Someone searching for information on Jewish people would be more likely to enter terms like "Judaism," "Jewish people," or "Jews" than the single word "Jew." In fact, prior to this incident, the word "Jew" only appeared about once in every 10 million search queries. Now it's likely that the great majority of searches on Google for "Jew" are by people who have heard about this issue and want to see the results for themselves."

So, i guess it's actually people of Jewish faith who are looking at this site?

Also, interestingly enough - the second website match is the Jewish Wikipedia, which we discussed in class today.
